In November 2022, Black Controls Company Inc. was contracted to assist with control panel builds to meet growing production demands. The Black Controls team travelled daily from Barrie to the Southern Ontario facility to provide top-tier support, during which time they became familiar with the company’s standards and expectations.
An opportunity arose to further streamline operations. Black Controls proposed building the panels for test stands at their Barrie shop, offering a more cost-effective and efficient solution. These test stands were crucial for diagnosing and troubleshooting critical components of the machinery. When a component needs maintenance, it’s removed from the machine and tested in isolation on a test stand. Accuracy and reliability are essential for ensuring the proper function of these parts.
This project demonstrated Black Controls’ ability to replicate complex schematics with specific components outside of the customer’s shop. The process began by reviewing the schematics and creating an accurate bill of materials, including measurements and panel layouts. This not only ensured the project’s success but also helped the customer update outdated schematics.
After the updated bill of materials was created, Black Controls sourced the necessary parts for panel construction. The build process was carried out with the same attention to detail, and notes and photos were taken (with permission) to aid in replicating the original panels. Once completed, each panel was assigned a unique code, allowing for tracking and quality control. This system ensured repeatable quality, tracking who built, tested, and inspected each panel, and documenting what was tested.
After rigorous testing for functionality and reliability, the panels were shipped, fully tracked and ready for installation. The customer was able to fulfill current orders while storing the surplus for future use, saving time and allowing labour to be reallocated. This project showcased Black Controls’ ability to replicate and deliver reliable products locally, leading to repeat orders for the same panels and continued trust in the company’s capabilities.
